Diamond Care

Part of a diamond's allure is its innate strength. Even though it is one of the hardest materials known to man, that does not mean it is indestructible. Diamonds can chip and break when exposed to enough stress (or stress at a weak point such as the girdle). Some setting styles are great at protecting the diamond (bezel) while others leave the diamond more exposed and at risk for damage.

As a general rule, you should try to be as conscious of your ring as possible when you are wearing it. Certain activities, such as gardening, vigorous sports/exercise (wearing your ring to the gym), or housecleaning (harsh chemicals cannot damage the diamond but may affect the metal surrounding it) should be avoided whenever possible. When taking your ring off, be sure to keep it separate from other jewelry as a diamond's hardness can easily damage other jewelry.

During the course of normal wear, your ring will be exposed to dust, dirt, perspiration, natural skin oils, lotions, and makeup - all of which may get trapped in your ring. We highly recommend that every 6 months you stop in to see us for a complimentary inspection and ultrasonic cleaning. At Marks Jewelers, our jewelry professionals will assess the integrity of all prongs and settings as well as examine your diamond all at no cost to you. You can also clean your jewelry at home in between in-store cleanings to keep it as pristine as possible. A few methods to clean at home are:

- Hot Water Soak: Mixture of 1 cup of hot water and a cap-full of household ammonia. Soak jewelry for 30 minutes, gently clean with a soft toothbrush, dip ring back into solution, then rinse under room temperature water while ring is in a strainer to prevent loss.

- Over-the-Counter Cleaners: Ask your jeweler for a liquid cleaner made specifically for jewelry and follow instructions on the label.

Last but not least one of the most important ways to care for your jewelry is to insure your diamond. The best way to safeguard one of the most important purchases of your life from the unthinkable is to get a Jewelry Appraisal/Insurance Replacement Evaluation.
